Around Azeroth: The king of the Melpomene

Valafar of <Sanguine Brood> on Exodar couldn’t wait for Carnival to get some beaded trinkets this year. Donning a glittery costume, complete with angry-drama-guy mask, he headed out to the Eye of Eternity for the weekly raid quest and walked away with five Emblems of Frost and Emblems of Triumph. And unlike at Mardi Gras, he didn’t even have to take his top off to get them.

Around Azeroth: An army of one

Posted on Jan 20, 2010 under screenshots | No Comment

We’ve gotten several submissions this weekend of the newest gold seller tactic. Dead body graffiti is apparently old school now — the latest trend is armies of identical gold sellers, spelling out the name of a site, marching in formation around Stormwind/Orgrimmar. Ben of Quel’thalas-EU sent in this particular screenshot, but they’ve also been spotted on Sargeras-EU and Daggerspine-EU.

Around Azeroth: The inappropriately used throne

Sometimes we get submissions to Around Azeroth that are not screenshots, but are nevertheless difficult to pass up. I could not in good conscience let this effort by Longrangedps of Ner’zhul go unrewarded. He writes that he took this picture at Blizzcon, adding, “Totally worth a full day of walking around with a newspaper, an extra pair of shorts, and toilet paper.”

Around Azeroth: Good, bad, I’m the cow with the gun

Pokwan of Shadow Council writes in that he’s “one young tauren warrior who’s had enough of dwarven scum invading Mulgore to dig carelessly into the Earth Mother.” Most people just confine themselves to doing a couple of those annoying starting level quests. Violence is never the answer, Pokwan! Wait. In Azeroth, it’s actually always the answer. Never mind.

Around Azeroth: Let us prey

Attention worshippers: your god is vastly inferior to the insect god. With eight legs, it can light fires, smite unbelievers, and deliver commandments with maximum efficiency. It also has the ability to paralyze and devour competing deities, which your run-of-the-mill supreme being lacks. All bow to the insect god! (Thanks to Krem for this Old Kingdom screenshot.)

Around Azeroth: An untenable situation

Bored in Nagrand (the zone), Bigtallyho of <Cataclysm> on Nagrand (the server) decided to engage in a little recreational Lost One-tossing. However, his arm grew weak over time, and he could no long hurl them all the way over the fire. They stuck there, impaled on the firewood. And that’s how draeneikabobs were discovered. Mmm … corrupted.

Around Azeroth: Throwing specialization

Hell hath no fury like an undead woman scorned, as Flówers of Kilrogg-EU recently learned. She’s been having an illicit affair with a Forsaken rogue. Unfortunately, the happy couple was caught in the act by his wife, who happened to also be a particularly skilled rogue. Flówers had no choice but to grab her clothes off the floor and run from the furious fan of knives. But she might have been in too much of a hurry — as you can see, she accidentally took her paramour’s shoulders and chestpiece!

Around Azeroth: Waistline envy

Posted on Jan 15, 2010 under screenshots | No Comment

In the news today: A study from Oxford University reports that fat stored in the buttocks and thighs is healthier than fat stored in the abdomen, since the lower body fat produces several disease-fighting hormones. Perhaps this helps explain why the curvier Lady Sylvanas has managed to live so long, while regular skinny undead seem to die at an alarmingly fast rate. Erogüro of <Queens of the Pwn Age> on Suramar paused to admire the Lady’s trim waistline during a recent Halls of Reflection run.

Druidess Hernia of <Mumra> on Skullcrusher-EU has captured a wild zhevra, which she will now bring to her nest, devour, and regurgitate to feed her family of little moonkins.

Around Azeroth: The charge of the pet brigade

Posted on Jan 15, 2010 under screenshots | No Comment

The new cross-realm dungeon finder has encouraged some folks who don’t usually get groups to give raiding a try. This pug-led PuG was photographed by tauren druid Brasson, who wrote, “<quiXotic> of Thunderhorn rolled into Ulduar late on Friday night to knock out XT and claim the badges from the weekly quest. Having nearly activated his hard mode, though, and that avoided only because one of the DPS was distracted with killing adds, we decided to steamroll another couple bosses. While crossing over the freshly fallen Kologarn, I noticed that my Summer Flame had gotten caught on top of the bridge - along with everyone else’s pets. Such a screenshot opportunity comes along only rarely, and could not be passed up.”

Around Azeroth: Waiting in vain

Posted on Jan 15, 2010 under screenshots | No Comment

Disappointed with the content in Wrath of the Lich King, Cygnus of <Tetractys of the Decad> on Drenden has decided to be first in line to greet Deathwing at Grim Batol. He sent in the following poem/rant/Unabomber-esque screed about tanking in WotLK:

  • Cygnus is waiting. Cygnus is a protection warrior that, like many heroes, was promised glory in the frozen north. Cygnus arrived in the freezing wastes to find no glory, but only that all the crowd control is now solely his job. Cygnus looked up to a sky with no sun, only to see a drake he had to ride, depriving him from his sword. Cygnus loved to learn new abilities during his training, and felt miserable when he was ordered to ride and charge with a lance. Cygnus hates being cold. Cygnus has had it with the Lich King. Cygnus is in Wetlands until the voices in his head stop calling for a “taunt”. Cygnus is now at the doors of Grim Batol, where the sun shines, and a new promise of glory will be made. Cygnus is waiting.

Around Azeroth: The power behind the throne

Vitrioli of <Red Thunder Clan> on Durotan snapped this shot after killing Loken in Halls of Lightning. He searched the area behind Loken’s throne for hidden treasure, but was only able to discover that the throne was actually made of foil-covered chocolate instead of stone. However, you can’t really consider this treasure. Even the most hardcore gamers would balk at eating chocolate that someone has been sitting on for twenty thousand years.

Mike and his friends of the <Borean Kilted Yaksmen> on Thorium Brotherhood ran into a bit of … difficulty during the Trials of the Grand Crusader. This inspired Mike to write a Choose Your Own Adventure-style narrative: “You come upon a door upon which the terrifying image of a skull is floating. Beneath your feet are piled high the bones of those who passed through the door before you. If you Flee, turn to page 156. If you open the door … you know what, just don’t open the door. Are you not seeing all the bones?”

Around Azeroth: The ship, the ship, the ship is on fire

Between yesterday’s submission and today’s, it seems like it’s pretty easy to have Trial of the Crusader bug out on you. Gnolie of <Eye Candy> on Executus got to the gunship battle before the massive area lag brought the server to the edge of disaster. All the NPCs on the ship disappeared, and the constant spam of Death and Decay and Consecrate caused the ship to look like it had become the victim of a surprise volcanic eruption.

These attacks have gotten so common that the bartender has figured out exactly what drinks to make to soothe the invaders’ bloodlust. Death from Above for the undead, Green and Mean for the orcs, High Jamaican Winds for the troll types, and of course Mind Erasers for the blood elves.

Around Azeroth: My only love sprung from my only hate

Posted on Jan 05, 2010 under screenshots | No Comment

Holy Toledo, this has got to be the most effort I’ve ever seen anyone put into an Around Azeroth submission. Wikiwand of <Hellions> on Cenarion Circle wrote the following Shakespearean parody to accompany this screenshot from the Undercity:

Two skeletons, both alike in dignity,
In vile Undercity, where we lay our scene,
From ancient bones break to new mutiny,
Where civil blood makes civil hands unclean.
From forth the fatal jaws of these two foes
A pair of skull-cross’d lovers take their life;
Whose misadventured piteous overthrows
Do with their undeath bury their fleshy strife.
The fearful passageway of their death-mark’d love,
And the continuance of their forsaken rage,
Which, but their skeletal end, nought could remove,
Is now the deathly hours’ traffic of our stage;
The which if you with missing ears attend,
What here shall miss, our death coils shall strive to mend.

How many old-school Horde players used to use the “forest of totems” strategy on the trash packs in Blackwing Lair? Draenei shaman Vhaelor of <Deux Ex Machina> on Destromath missed out on this experience, being Alliance and all, so he decided to recreate it in the Stormwind castle. Unfortunately, Vhaelor himself couldn’t see his mighty forest, so it was up to his friends to inform him of this bug. His pal Whitepaws snapped this photo and sent it in to us. Thanks, guys!

While venturing into Icecrown Citadel, death knight Joanus of <Inner Circle> on Kilrogg-EU discovered this disturbing message spelled out on the ground with well-placed fish feasts. “The biggest questions to be asked here are who put this there? Why?” asked Joanus. “Is this a message from Jaina to Arthas? What does the Lich King think of this? How long has it been there? I guess the only way to find out is to head to the top of the Citadel and ask him personally.” Yeah, good luck with that.
