Scouting around with the Crashin’ Thrashin’ Racer

Cabinetsanchez over on LJ has documented something that I saw in action yesterday while running a few instances — while it’s a ton of fun to run my Crashin’ Thrashin Racer around (I’m undefeated since I picked up the achievement the first day I got the toy, by the way), players have found a few extra ways to make the Racers work for them. Yesterday, I saw one of my group members using the Racer a few times to scout the instance ahead and see what pulled with what, and as CS says, it worked great: while the Racer will aggro enemies, they won’t tag on to the rest of the group — they’ll just reset after they destroy the little car.

CS also says that the Racer takes no falling damage, so you can send it exploring off of cliffs and platforms, and he says that though the car is considered level 60, its aggro range is pretty small (I can attest to this, as we were driving it pretty close to enemies yesterday without it registering on their radar). And he’s got an even more devious use (some might say this is an exploit): bosses aggroed by the racer will sometimes despawn after they conquer it for up to 30 seconds or so. That seems like a hotfix waiting to happen, but I haven’t personally tried it, so it may not be as useful as it sounds.

The downside of this is that the Racer was meant to be a fun item, and if it really does lead to behavior that Blizzard considers exploiting, they might have to think twice about including great items like this in the future. We’ll have to see what their ruling on this is, but hopefully no matter what happens (I’m guessing a quick hotfix, maybe even shrinking the range of the Racer’s controller), this won’t prevent Blizzard from giving us more fun toys later on.

She said yes, and I thank the Tuskarr

It’s Christmas morning. Winter’s Veil sprinkles snow over the idyllic mountains near Ironforge while gnomes frolic across the battlegrounds working to get With A Little Helper from my Friends. Most of us have the good sense to sleep in late. Some of us, however, have big plans.

With the aid of a homemade Christmas card featuring my own gnomified dwarf Warrior and a Tuskarr fishermen, I popped The Question to my dearly beloved Dranei Priest (and sometimes Nelf Druid) today. She said yes, which was precisely the result I was hoping to get. Here’s how it went down.

Sitting by the tree, I asked her to wear a blindfold for a moment. Working quickly, inspired by a Tuskarr quest, I sprinkled Swedish Fish down the hallway. Then, I removed the blinder, handing her the home-made Christmas card. On the front was a screenshot (above) of my dwarf completing the quest The Way to His Heart… and on the inside it said “Follow your heart … and the fish.” She followed the trail of gummy fish to where I’d hung a necklace strung with the proxy ring. (Since this is the second time at bat for both of us, she wanted to help pick out the ring.) And voila, I had the best Christmas ever.

It’s the day after Christmas. A fair portion of our readership is only now getting Wrath of the Lich King installed on their computer, especially after the gift exchanges of the last few days. Over the weeks since Wrath’s release, we’ve had quite a bit of content to ease you through your first steps into Northrend. With this latest wave of people hitting the frozen shores for the first time, it’s a good opportunity to look back on a lot of that.

Fixing instance server errors

Posted on Jan 06, 2009 under how to's | No Comment

You may have seen this same error what9000 is getting every time he tries to enter an instance: he gets bounced out of the portal and “Additional Instances Can’t be Launched” pops up on the screen. Just in case you’ve never quite heard exactly how the game works, the World of Warcraft is actually a series of servers, and as you travel across it, you contact more than one system of computers. Your realm is one group of servers, but within that group, there are many different computers sending information to and from yours — when you’re in Azeroth, you’re talking to one server, when you go out to Outland, you visit another, and in Northrend you’re on yet another. And there are even servers that track non-location information: how much money you have, what you’re wearing, and so on.

Likewise, instances have their own system of servers, which is why you can sometimes be in an instance when the world server “outside” will go down, and if you leave that instance you’ll get disconnected. And Instance servers can be overloaded as well. This error message is likely a way for Blizzard to keep from crashing the instance servers — if too many instances of a dungeon have already been created, new players trying to get in are not allowed.

The Dos and Don’ts of getting a port

I’m a dork. I admit it. I love my mage and I love making portals for people, even non-tippers. In fact, you have to work pretty hard not to get a port from me. Which is why, even after decades of dealing with anonymous jerks in BBS chat rooms and on the internet, I was a little shocked at how rude a level 62 Tauren Shaman who shall remain nameless was when demanding a port from me. Maybe he just didn’t know any better. So here is a little guide as to how to increase your chances of getting a port from a mage you don’t know.

WoW Rookie: Leaner, meaner character controls

New around here? WoW Rookie points WoW’s newest players to the resources they need to get acclimated. Send us a note to suggest a WoW Rookie topic.

How do you control your character? If you move with the W-A-S-D keys and stab at spell and ability icons on-screen with your mouse, you’re missing out on a whole world of options that can streamline your game. Simply by setting up your character controls a little differently, you can make your game play easier and more efficient. WoW Rookie pulls together a whole host of options to mull over.

One of the first points to consider: How do you move your character? If you read a bit of WoW and gaming sites around the ‘net, you’ve probably seen the phrase “mouthbreathing keyboard turner” bandied about. You’re a keyboard turner if you use keys (usually W-A-S-D) on the keyboard to turn and move your character. Your character can turn (and get behind and around things and other players) much, much faster if you whip around with the mouse rather than slowly pivoting in place with your keyboard. So why’s that such a big issue?

Wrath Dailies: Aces High!

For our Wrath Dailies series thus far, we’ve been trying to do them in groups. For example, we did the Kalu’ak dailies first, and now Adam is going through the Cooking dailies. I’ve decided to jump out of order for this one, because it’s actually somewhat important beyond just another daily quest. This quest is actually training for Phase 3 of the Malygos encounter, in which you do battle with the Aspect of Magic from the back of a red drake.

You pick up Aces High! from Corastrasza on the Band of Transmutation, one of the floating platforms around The Nexus. If you’ve never done it before, head down to the Transitus Shield, there’s a quest that will tell you exactly where to go. Practicing with this quest will make the fight much, much easier when you fight Malygos one day, because the abilities the Drake has in this quest are the exact same as the ones in that fight.

Freezing Arrow and you

Posted on Jan 06, 2009 under how to's | No Comment

Aspect of the Hare has a great post up about “Freezing Arrow for non-Hunters” — of all of the new Wrath abilities, Freezing Arrow seems right up there with Death Grip as a game changer during instance pulls. But as great as it is (a Hunter can now trap a mob at a distance, which means trapping casters is much, much easier), there are drawbacks that you other group members need to know about, hence AotH’s post.

First and foremost, chain trapping is out. On a normal trap, a Hunter can lay down a trap early, and get past the extra 10 second cooldown on getting the trap up again, which means they can have another trap pick up the same mob when the first one finishes its duration. But pulling with Freezing Arrow means you can’t lay down the trap early, which means that the 10 second cooldown will always be in effect: there will be ten seconds after the trap comes up before the Hunter can Freezing Arrow again.

There are loopholes, as AotH says: Resourcefulness can help Survival Hunters with the cooldown a bit, and Readiness means a Hunter can throw out two Arrows in a row (but no more than that). And of course positioning helps a lot — if a Hunter can lay down a Freezing Arrow early and then kite a mob into it, chain trapping is theoretically possible (though with casters, it’s going to be really tough, just because you have to move so much to get them to move after you). But non-Hunters beware: Freezing Arrow is good for trapping a mob for about 20 seconds. After that, you’re on your own.
