Around Azeroth: Core values

With half the hunters nowadays running around with exotic pets, it’s easy to underappreciate their contributions to the game. But Rockmar of <Blue Label> on Barthilas knows what a treasure his core hound is, and he’s taken the time to give it a wonderful home in which to romp and play. Candles, lava, and the bones of some ancient creature — what more could a two-headed demon dog ask for? Now all he needs is a Frank and Louie-type cat to chase. (Warning: linked picture may be disturbing to some people.)

Around Azeroth: We come from the land of the ice and snow

It looks like this particular instance run has gone down like a lead zeppelin, to quote an infamous phrase. (Joke’s on you, Entwistle — at least John Bonham died before he got old.)

According to Joline of <Deep Thought> on Stormreaver, a group member disconnected in the middle of an instance, and the whole gang was stuck waiting for him to make his way through the 600-person queue. They started passing around some of those paper zeppelins you can buy at the Dalaran toy shop to pass the time. There’s a little trick where if you run away from a zeppelin, it continues following you, but you also get it in your inventory to throw back. Zeppelin + Bug + Time + Empty Instance = This Picture. Hmm … these zeppelin stacks remind me of something from college. Ah, yes. The big ol’ pile of footballs. Such memories.

Around Azeroth: My little pony

A horse is a horse, of course, of course, unless, of course, it’s a horse about to be devoured by an oversized mutant bear. Ah … wait. Crap. I was never that good at TV theme songs. Anyway, Azglok of <That Seventies Guild> on Darrowmere recently took advantage of a sizable size buff to go out and scare the local ponies on his bear mount. Hmm. The area is filled with beautiful tame ponies, yet Azglok’s character is choosing to ride on a feral, broad-backed bear. I guess what they say about tauren brainpower is true.

Around Azeroth: Inner fire

How vain are blood elves? Well, Niohdor of <Kalimdors Legion> on Hydraxis is so vain, he probably thinks this post is about him. Wait … it is. Okay, he’s so vain that he’s hired a team of gnome magicians to give him a constant sparkly glow effect, like that vampire is supposed to have in those ridiculous Twilight books. (Before the flames, I’ll note that I read them and actually enjoyed the first two before it all turned into terrible fanfiction. How can anyone actually find the whole “I love you! But I must leave in case I hurt you! No, I can’t stand to be apart! Damn everyone else, we’re meant to be!” thing attractive? Why can’t people take their romantic cues from Casablanca instead and realize that there are more important things in the world than being in love?)

So what’s really going on here, aside me having some unresolved issues with the portrayal of relationships in modern media? Niohdor writes that the second boss in Heroic Violet Hold died while doing a spellcast, and the casting graphics bugged, remaining stuck. They finished the instance with this shiny purple effect just hanging around in the middle of the floor, and Niohdor decided to take a shot for posterity.

Around Azeroth: The negative universe

Take out a pencil and a sheet of paper, folks, because it’s pop quiz time! Well, you need something to pass the time while waiting in those queues. So what’s going on in this screenshot?

  1. Blizzard has decided to be a bit less subtle in its warnings to people who are exploring out of bounds.
  2. Outland is now a no smoking area. Please take your cigarettes to a different universe.
  3. iGy of Dunemaul-EU could probably use a new video card. He would also like to give a shoutout to all his ex-guildies in <Ravenous>.
  4. Around Azeroth would like you to stop sending in screenshots of the sky in Outland.

The correct answer is 3, although about a year and a half ago 4 would have definitely been the right choice. Now that we’re spending all our time in the land of the ice and snow, it’s sort of nice to see that old familiar landscape. Although it looks like a lot of us aren’t in the land of ice and snow right now. Hmm. Queue is … 441. Forget it, I’m going to go start Bioshock.

Around Azeroth: Underfoot

Happy New Year, everybody. I’m sure this picture is a pretty accurate representation of many of your hangovers this morning. But it’s actually a cautionary platitude, well illustrated by Emiri of <Court of the Ruby Grail> on Maelstrom. In the words of the immortal Satchel Paige, “Don’t look back — something might be gaining on you.”

Around Azeroth: Kicking the bucket

Are all undead evil, soulless, plague-creating menaces? Shut up, paladins, we know what you think. Anyway, Tautau of Mal’Ganis looks positively despondent in this picture, taken at the cross of Hallow’s End and the Scourge invasion event. Is he upset at the burning of Brill (repeated every fifteen minutes)? Or is it the imminent attack from his less fortunate undead brethren in the necropolis above that’s making him sad? Nah. He’s just noticed that he’s about to be beaten to a pulp by a horde of Tuskarr looking for their bucket.

Around Azeroth: Raiding for cowards

Posted on Jan 06, 2009 under screenshots | No Comment

Hey, what has two thumbs and is too scared to face a pre-BC raid boss? This guy! Actually, Blabba from Bladefist is less a coward and more of a victim of circumstance. As he tells it, his guild took ten people through to brute-force Molten Core, only two of whom had ever done the instance before. The experienced leaders decided to have some fun with the group on Ragnaros. They told the casters to stand with their backs to the wall, but informed melee that they were on their own.

As such, Blabba was taken by surprise when Rag’s knockback blasted him to the top of the pillar. He jumped down, managed to get in one hit with his weapon, and was hit back to the pillar again. After this experience, he decided that his guild could nine-man Rag and stayed atop the pillar for the rest of the fight. It took his group two minutes to locate him after the boss went down. I can’t blame him — I’ve spent many a boss fight wishing I were watching it from a safe distance away.

Around Azeroth: Stone cold killer

Someone really needs to tell Rohnin of Stormscale-EU that this is not the most efficient way to farm for gems. That is, unless he wants to socket his gear entirely with Runed Scarlet Rubies and Brilliant Autumn’s Glows. Which would not be too bad of a choice if you think about it. But unless he can kill some shardlings with blue horns, he’s going to have a bit of trouble in arena. (Note: I am probably wrong about the gem placements for mages. My base of knowledge for gemming begins and ends at selling them for ridiculous prices.)

Around Azeroth: That’s a wipe

Posted on Jan 06, 2009 under screenshots | No Comment

In my previous life as a raider, I was a participant in some pretty spectacular wipes: unfortunate healer blow-ups on Baron Geddon, surpise unstealths in the Suppression Room, and the always popular “let me target Golemagg from the bridge” accidental auto-shot pull. I was even the cause of one once, when a warrior paid me some much-needed gold to stealth around the Rajaxx event in AQ20 to get a coffer chest. It worked until … it didn’t, which resulted in a chain of eighty or so mobs chasing us to the gates. There were no survivors.

Gustav and friends have suffered an embarrasing death here in Zul’Farrak. Not only did they die on Gahr’zilla, but their bodies have been scattered around the instance, and Gustav has landed in the sky. Think they called it after this one?
